Physical Preparation

  • Fitness:

    • Be physically fit for the terrain and conditions. Hiking and climbing can be physically demanding.

  • Check Weather:

  • First Aid: Have basic first aid knowledge and kit.

    •  Take a wilderness first aid course.

    • Knowing how to treat injuries in a remote setting is crucial.

    • Carry a small first aid kit.

  • Leave No Trace:

    • Educate on the principles of Leave No Trace.

    •  Including packing out waste.

    •  Minimizing campfire impact. 

    • Respecting wildlife.​

Gear and Equipment

  • Backpacking Equipment:

  • Have the right gear for the trip:

    • Backpack: A comfortable and appropriate size for your trip.

    • Clothing: Layered clothing, moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating layer, and a waterproof outer layer.

    • Food and Water: High-energy foods and bring water or a reliable water filtration system.

  • Essential Items:

  • Research the Area:

    • Understand the terrain, potential hazards, wildlife, water sources

  • Map and Route:

    • Plan a detailed route and have alternative options in case conditions change. Identify key landmarks and waypoints to navigate effectively.

  • Emergency Plan:

    • Know what to do in case of injury, severe weather, or getting lost.

  • Communication Devices:

    • Learn how to use a map and compass (or GPS device)

    • It’s important to know how to find your way if technology fails.
