Recreating in the North Cascades provides awe inspiring views but the rugged and wild terrain requires careful planning and preparation. Research the area and understand the natural environment, potential hazards, wildlife, and water sources. Ensure you are physically fit and equipped for your trip.

Physical Preparation

  • Fitness: ​

    • Hiking and climbing can be physically demanding

    • Be physically fit for the terrain and conditions

  • Check Weather:

  • First Aid: Have basic first aid knowledge and kit

    • Take a wilderness first aid course

    • Knowing how to treat injuries in a remote setting is crucial

    • Carry a small first aid kit

  • Leave No Trace:

    • Educate on the principles of Leave No Trace

    • Including packing out waste

    • Minimizing campfire impact

    • Respecting wildlife

Gear and Equipment

Have the right gear for the trip. 

  • Backpacking Equipment:

    • A comfortable and appropriate sized backpack for your trip.

    • Layered clothing, moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating layer, and a waterproof outer layer.

    • High-energy food 

    • Water or a reliable water filtration system

  • Essential Items:

  • Research the Area:

    • Understand the terrain including potential hazards, wildlife, water sources

  • Map and Route:

    • Plan a detailed route and have alternative options in case conditions change

    • Identify key landmarks and waypoints to navigate effectively
